This might show up twice, since I submitted the links to the online form as well.

Randomized Controlled study of the effects of gender bias workshop
- This study was done at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
- Looked at the difference in several attitude measurements both before and after a 2.5 hour workshop on gender bias.
- Measurements were done
- The workshop included techniques to intentionally change habits. I thought this aspect of the training was important.
- I think the approach taken in the workshop was important and might give a starting point for similar workshops at the U of R

Improving Hiring Practices & the new library search is amazing!
I just read this paper:
Interventions That Affect Gender Bias in Hiring: A Systematic Review Carol Isaac, PhD, PT, Barbara Lee, PhD, and Molly Carnes, MD, MS Academic Medicine, 84(10), 1440-1446.
It is a review, with some meta-analysis, of published, randomized controlled studies aimed at reducing gender bias in hiring. I'm not sure who is handling hiring practices (is anyone?).
It summarizes some great ideas for preventing bias in the hiring process and some tips for women who are job hunting.
Also, the new U of R library search is amazing! Just past in the title of the paper and it finds it. It is only a couple of clicks to get to the paper and if you are working from home, it automatically asks you to authenticate.

Gender Bias Calculator - for Letters of reference
I haven't tried this yet but it looks interesting. You paste in the letter of reference and it counts the number of words normally associated with male and female letters of reference. I will give it a try on some letters I have written in the past.

Unfortunately, we do not (yet) have recent data on
women academic staff in STEM disciplines. That being said, the UCASS
survey results are now out and within a couple of months we should have
the disaggregated data necessary to answer your
question. In the meantime, here are a few resources, you may find
interesting:
UCASS first preliminary results were out yesterday.
It was mainly a release on salaries and gender. More information will
follow in the next months.

Incentives in academia
I found this blog post and the paper interesting. It's about incentives, and the effects it has had on research. I think this kind of links in to our talks about taking a sabbatical after paternity leave, and how, in an attempt to make something 'fair', this ends up being more beneficial for men and not women.

Plan for March 29th meeting - Criteria documents
At our March 3 meeting, we decided the next topic we will research is Faculty Criteria Documents. For those of you who don't know, these are documents where the path to career progress is spelled out. Aka, what you need to do to get tenure, promotion, merit, and even just to get your yearly career growth increment. This is often called "progress through the ranks".
Specifically, we will look for documents from other universities that have clearly spelled out support for women (if such a thing exists).
I think it is also important to look at how criteria documents can inadvertently discriminate against women. We know this could be the case because women progress through the ranks slower than men (even at our own esteemed institution).
If you find such documents, please post links here, or upload the PDFs to our shared folder (instructions in the previous posts).

Editing a shared Google Document
Hi all,
Just thought I would show you how to edit shared documents.
First, click on the link to get to the document. You will get this screen.
You can either edit the document by clicking on "open in Google Doc" or you can first add the document to your Google Drive, and then go there to open it and edit it.
If you want to add it to your Google Drive, you have to login in to your Google Account.
To make it clear who has added which suggestions, you want to change the setting from "edit" to "suggesting" as shown below.
I can show you how to do this on Friday as well.

White doc
Hi all,
At any rate, I wanted to put this out there for
comments, etc. Please remember this is
only a suggestion and a starting point!
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B7r93VVd8FuZbV90MVpmMWl0Yzg/view?usp=sharing
So, I thought that I would post my notes that I was taking
on Friday. They revolved around a developing
outline of the document that we are planning.
The definition of a white document is as follows:
A white paper is an authoritative report or guide that
informs readers concisely about a complex issue and presents the issuing body's
philosophy on the matter. It is meant to help readers understand an issue,
solve a problem, or make a decision.
Seems very descriptive of what we want to do.
