Plan for March 29th meeting - Criteria documents

At our March 3 meeting, we decided the next topic we will research is Faculty Criteria Documents. For those of you who don't know, these are documents where the path to career progress is spelled out. Aka, what you need to do to get tenure, promotion, merit, and even just to get your yearly career growth increment. This is often called "progress through the ranks".

Specifically, we will look for documents from other universities that have clearly spelled out support for women (if such a thing exists).

I think it is also important to look at how criteria documents can inadvertently discriminate against women. We know this could be the case because women progress through the ranks slower than men (even at our own esteemed institution).

If you find such documents, please post links here, or upload the PDFs to our shared folder (instructions in the previous posts).

Shared Google Drive Folder

We have a shared google drive folder - anyone with this link can edit it (aka - add files or edit files).

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B4D9-q4WDh6LbFRnTDYwU0NSWTg?usp=sharing

As well as posting interesting links to the blog, please post links or citations to papers you think are useful to this file

This will help us keep an ongoing list that is easier to check than going back through all the blog posts.

Hey!

Just saw this.  I know we've spoken about not going down the route of encouraging kids, but I just want to have this article somewhere where it will be easy to find!  :)

Enjoy!

Editing a shared Google Document

Hi all,
Just thought I would show you how to edit shared documents.
First, click on the link to get to the document. You will get this screen.

You can either edit the document by clicking on "open in Google Doc" or you can first add the document to your Google Drive, and then go there to open it and edit it.
If you want to add it to your Google Drive, you have to login in to your Google Account.

To make it clear who has added which suggestions, you want to change the setting from "edit" to "suggesting" as shown below.

I can show you how to do this on Friday as well.

White doc

Hi all,

So, I thought that I would post my notes that I was taking on Friday.  They revolved around a developing outline of the document that we are planning.

The definition of a white document is as follows:
A white paper is an authoritative report or guide that informs readers concisely about a complex issue and presents the issuing body's philosophy on the matter. It is meant to help readers understand an issue, solve a problem, or make a decision.
Seems very descriptive of what we want to do.

At any rate, I wanted to put this out there for comments, etc.  Please remember this is only a suggestion and a starting point!

As I mentioned at our last meeting, Nature put together a diversity issue in 2014.  I spent some time this morning looking for articles and have put some editorials in a folder on Google drive found here:

As well, here are two links to some grey literature.  I couldn't find any peer reviewed stuff, but will keep looking...

Next meeting?

At yesterday's meeting, we decided to look for articles/data the show why diversity is needed in Science. However, I don't think we picked a date and time for the next meeting. Perhaps this was done at a previous meeting.
